NNU President Receives Honorary Doctor of Divinity Degree from Korea Nazarene University

September 18, 2019

Northwest Nazarene University (NNU) President Joel Pearsall was presented with an honorary Doctor of Divinity degree at Korea Nazarene University (KNU) in Cheonan City, South Korea on September 9, 2019. The degree is in recognition of President Pearsall’s career in Nazarene higher education, as well as an appreciation for NNU’s investment in the partnership that has been fostered between NNU and KNU.

“The NNU community celebrates the news of the honorary doctorate bestowed on President Pearsall by Korea Nazarene University. As part of this recognition, KNU is honoring the rich and longstanding relationship between our two universities,” Mike Zahare, NNU Board of Trustees Chair, said. “We are deeply grateful to Korea Nazarene University for this meaningful and significant honor.”

The relationship between NNU and KNU began when Pearsall’s father, Dr. Kenneth Pearsall, went and served as interim president in Korea for one year at the end of his presidential term at NNC in 1983. Since that time, leaders at the two universities have continued to develop the relationship between these two institutions. NNU has sent an MBA class to KNU, and KNU frequently sends a small group of students to NNU for a semester of study. Additionally, select KNU faculty spend their sabbatical year at NNU.

According to Joel Pearsall, “Our partnership with KNU is instrumental in providing insight into the world for both NNU and KNU students as they gain first-hand experience in cross-cultural interaction and understanding. We are grateful for the opportunities these types of relationships provide in enriching the experiences of our community.”
