Streaming Media

On-demand streaming media describes audio and visual content that is stored on a server and transferred to a Web browser in a continuous stream, as opposed to content that users download to their computer. Getting content from analog to streamed typically involves five (sometimes six) steps:

1) Prepare (record a video or DVD or acquire one)
2) Digitize
3) Encode (and often, Rip)
4) Upload
5) Serve

Refer to the Streaming Media Information and Policy document (PDF) to make sure your planned use of a video complies with copyright laws and NNU procedures. This policy was approved by the Instructional Resources Council in February 2007.

One particularly helpful copyright resource is Baruch College's Interactive Guide to Using Copyrighted Media.

Links for Streaming Media Files

The path you use for setting up streaming media depends on whether you are placing your file on your own N: drive or on the streaming server itself.

Most individuals use a folder called public.www on their own N: drive. The path for streamed files placed on an N: drive will depend on whether the individual is an Employee (faculty, admin or staff) or a Partner (adjuncts).

Some departments use streaming often and have asked for a special folder on the streaming server. Check with your program assistant or director to find out if your department has such a folder.
