Scholarships

Scholarships help provide opportunity for deserving students to experience the benefits of attending NNU. The establishment of an endowed scholarship not only aids our students, but provides our donors with the personal fulfillment of knowing they have in some way invested in the future of our young people.

Finding financial resources to meet college costs is a huge and growing challenge faced by today's students. Endowed scholarships help meet this need, and at the same time create an ongoing tribute to individuals in whose honor it is named.

An endowed gift is not only an investment in the future of NNU, it also matches the donor's highest ideals and aspirations to those of the University. It is a powerful and lasting statement that the donor shares the values of the University in the preparation of young men and women for lives of service.

How to give to a Scholarship Endowment

Finding financial resources to meet college costs is a huge challenge faced by today's students. An Endowed Scholarship offers a way to help meet this need, and at the same time create an ongoing tribute to individuals in whose honor it is established.

An endowed gift is not only an investment in the future of NNU – it also matches the donor's highest ideals and aspirations to those of the University. It is a powerful and lasting statement that the donor shares the values of the University, in the preparation of young men and women for lives of service. Ways to Give:

Gifts of Cash

Many donors make a gift of $10,000 or more to fully fund and activate a scholarship. Often these donors continue to contribute on a regular basis to build their scholarship. Others may start a fund with a modest gift and make periodic payments to reach $10,000, at which time the scholarship will become endowed.

Give Online

Gifts of Real Estate
A valuable gift could be a residence, vacation home, commercial property or farm. Subject to certain limitations, real estate gifts qualify for an immediate charitable tax deduction for the full value of the property, and capital gains tax is avoided.

Securities
Two tax benefits result from a donation of securities that have appreciated in value and have been held for more than 12 months.  The entire market value may be deducted subject to certain limitations and no capital gains tax is paid on the appreciated portion of the gift.

Please notify the college prior to gifting stocks or mutual funds. Donors can contact Shawn Blenker, Director of Planned Giving at Northwest Nazarene University, at (208) 467-8017 or

It is important for the University Advancement office to know when to expect gifts of securities, who is to be credited with the gift, and the purpose for which those gifts should be used (i.e. University Fund, Scholarship, Charitable Gift Annuity, etc).

Then simply have your broker transfer your securities to Northwest Nazarene University's brokerage account with Charles Schwab. Our account number is 6717-2999 and the DTC number for the account is 0164. Once we receive the transferred shares we will send you a receipt for your gift.

Life Income Plans
Through a variety of plans, a life income gift may be given for which the donor (and/or someone he or she may designate) can receive for life the income generated by the gift. A life income gift results in both immediate and estate tax deductions. The legal name for two of the most widely used plans are; the Charitable Gift Annuity and the Charitable Remainder Unitrust. At the donor's death, the gift funds a scholarship.  For more information, click here.

We are happy to provide additional information about ideas discussed on this site, or a variety of other planned giving options, as YOU deterine the best way to structure your gifts. Your inquiry will be treated in complete confidence. This information is offered as a service to our friends.

Endowed Scholarship List

The list of scholarships below is a testimony to the love and sacrifice of so many who believe the ideals of NNU.  The note below says well what we experience in the University Advancement office on a daily basis.  Scholarships make a difference.

The generosity of so many faithful supporters of NNU has seen the scholarship endowment grow to over $18,000,000 and now provides in excess of $650,000 annually to students.  Thank you to everyone who has given to create these wonderful scholarships.

“Yes, I made it!  Today I’m a registered nurse.  You made this possible, and you have forever changed my life.  The pinning ceremony was awesome.  I just wish you were here.  You would have been so proud of me.  Graduation was the following day on May 6th, and you should have seen me marching with confidence, proud of my achievement.  For four good years you have stood with me.  You have invested in me generously.  This is my promise to you: I will carry on the good works and invest in the less fortunate generously.  I want to be like you, to change people’s lives, to give them hope and let them know that their lives can turn around like mine.  You have really challenged me; your commitment to see me succeed has taught me to be committed in whatever I do.  I want you to know that you have prepared me for a great course in this life.  I can go on and on because I am full of joy and thanksgiving.  I want you to know that from the bottom of my heart, I am so thankful to you for helping me through my education.”
