IRA Charitable Rollover
On October 3rd, Congress passed H.R. 1424 which extends the IRA Charitable Rollover that was first enacted in 2006.  This act permits an IRA owner age 70½ or older to make a direct transfer to charity without incurring income tax on the distribution. The transfer may be up to $100,000 in one year and this IRA rollover will exist for year 2008 and year 2009.

Life Income Plans

Realizing both immediate and estate tax deductions, a life income gift can be made for which the donor (and/or designee) can receive for life the income generated by the gift.  Two widely used plans are Charitable Gift Annuity and the Charitable Remainder Unitrust.

Charitable Gift Annuity
The charitable gift annuity has been in existence for at least 170 years and provides annuity rates as high as 11.3%.  A gift annuity is a simple combination of two concepts: a charitable gift and a guaranteed fixed income.  The charitable gift annuity provides a way to give a gift of significance while still retaining income from the gift for the rest of your life.

The donor may choose a current or deferred annuity for one or two lives.  Most annuities are funded with cash but they can also be funded with appreciated property like stock or real estate.  In addition, the donor may decide how frequently payments will be made.

Charitable Remainder Unitrust
The charitable trust provides a method for individuals to transfer cash, securities or property to a trust to benefit NNU while retaining an income for life.  The donor receives a number of current tax benefits, including the bypass of capital gain on appreciated assets and a charitable income tax deduction.  The trust is flexible and is carefully structured to fit the donor's individual estate needs.

Gifts of Securities
Two tax benefits result from a donation of securities that have appreciated in value and have been held for more than 12 months.  The entire market value may be deducted subject to certain limitations and no capital gains tax is paid on the appreciated portion of the gift.

Please notify the college prior to gifting stocks or mutual funds. Donors can contact Shawn Blenker, Director of Planned Giving at Northwest Nazarene University, at (208) 467-8017 or

It is important for the University Advancement office to know when to expect gifts of securities, who is to be credited with the gift, and the purpose for which those gifts should be used (i.e. University Fund, Scholarship, Charitable Gift Annuity, etc).

Then simply have your broker transfer your securities to Northwest Nazarene University's brokerage account with Charles Schwab. Our account number is 6717-2999 and the DTC number for the account is 0164. Once we receive the transferred shares we will send you a receipt for your gift.

Gifts of Real Estate
A valuable gift could be a residence, vacation home, commercial property or farm.  Subject to certain limitations, real estate gifts qualify for an immediate charitable tax deduction for the full value of the property, while capital gains tax is avoided.

Gifts of Life Estate Reserved
A donor can give his/her home or farm while reserving the right to live in the home or to continue to farm the property for as long as the donor lives.  Immediate tax benefits result from having contributed the gift in this way.

Gifts of Cash Value Life Insurance
NNU can benefit from a gift of an existing cash value life insurance policy that may have outlived its original purpose.  Another option is to purchase a life insurance policy and name the university as the owner and beneficiary.  The donor may be able to substantially increase the amount of the gift while deducting the premium payments as a charitable contribution.

 Gifts through a Will
After providing for members of the family, the will an be a convenient vehicle for making a charitable gift of lasting value.  This will may provide for 1) a fixed amount, 2) a certain percentage of the estate, or 3) the remainder after specific distributions have been made.  Will Your Will be Known?

Benefits to You

Tax Benefits

Changes in tax laws have eliminated many of the deductions once used to minimize taxes.  A person who makes charitable gifts may benefit from one of the oldest and most flexible deductions remaining - the charitable deduction.  Donors may save more than they thought possible by giving in this way.

Reduce Estate Tax/Probate Costs

Gifts to NNU, now or at death, avoid federal estate tax without any percentage limitation; a contribution now may reduce probate costs later.

Life Income
It is possible to give a gift now and secure a current tax deduction, while retaining a lifetime income from the value of the gift.

Unlock Appreicated Investments
Assets that have grown in value but have a low yield can be given to NNU without incurring a capital gains tax.
