Student Phone System
Student Phones
Hooking up your dorm phone
A phone jack is provided in each dorm room. If you would like to have a phone number assigned to you, please create a ticket at http://help.nnu.edu. Your phone number will be yours throughout your years at NNU.
No special phones are needed in NNU dorms; just about any normal house phone works on the NNU telephone system.
On the wall in your room, there are two blue jacks and a white jack. Plug the phone into the white jack only. (The blue jacks are for computers, and can be damaged if connected incorrectly.)
The white jack should have a number beside it, which is the room location number but it is NOT your personal extension. See more information on this page under Your Extension find out about your personal extension.
Your extension
A phone extension can be assigned to any student who needs one. It includes a free voice mail box. In fact, voice mail is available for students even if they do not have a physical phone. (For information on Voice Mail, read the Voice Mail section of this page!)
To request your personal phone extension or voice mail, login on the help website, http://help.nnu.edu with your NNU user name a password. Set up a ticket, giving your name, your i.d. number and your location (dorm name and room number). Ask for a room extension to be assigned to you. You will need to furnish your own phone. When your extension is assigned you may set up your voice mail as explained on this website.
Your personal extension, when one is assigned to you, will be yours for the entire time you are at NNU.
After your phone extension has been set up, you may connect your phone to it and test it. If you test your extension and it is not ringing to your room, please use another phone to call the Technology & Media Resources help desk at 467-8111 (or x8111), or login on the help site and create a ticket so a technician can get your phone working correctly.
Making a call
When calling an on-campus phone, you only need to dial the last four numbers of the phone number you are calling.
You need to dial ‘9’ first to connect to an off-campus phone number. After you dial '9', dial the phone number and the rest is like a normal phone. (NOTE: Depending on the phone on which you are dialing, you may not hear a second dial-tone after dialing ‘9’ for a regular outside phone call.)
Long Distance
NNU no longer provides a long distance service to students. Students have shifted the major portion of their phone usage to cell phones. Since long distance carriers have a minimum amount they would charge the University, it has become too expensive to provide long distance to only a few students.
If you do not own a cell phone, the least expensive source for student long distance is a long distance calling card purchased at a retailer such as Paul's, Wal Mart, Costco, or Sam's.
Receiving off-campus calls
If you have an on-campus extension set up, your friends and family will dial 208-467-8600 first. When the automated system answers their call, they may put in your extension number at any time during the recording to connect to your extension. If they do not know your extension, they may follow the instructions on the recording to search for your name while on the phone. To protect your privacy, your extension is not revealed on the phone system.
Setting Up Student Voice Mail
How to set up your voice mail:
1. Dial 8600 from any phone on campus and follow these steps:
- Enter your extension. (This is a 4 digit number that you have been using.) When you hear the automated message come on press * (asterisk key).
- The attendant will ask for a Passcode. Enter 9999.
- After this, the auto attendant will walk you through the process of choosing your own pass code, creating a greeting and recording your name.
2. Record your greeting - When it is time to record your greeting, there are IMPORTANT items that you need to have in each greeting. Here is a sample greeting and an explanation.
"Hello. You have reached (your name and or extension). If you would like the phone to ring in my room, press 0, otherwise stay on the phone and leave me a message."
If the caller presses 0, the call will be routed to the campus location that is associated with your personal extension. If they stay on the line and leave a message, the message will be sent to your NNU email account.
