NNU’s Wesley Center is partnering with the Christian Community Development Association and the Evangelical Immigration Table (EIT) to conduct a one-day conference titled “Engaging Immigration: A Ministry Leader’s Conference on Thinking Biblically about Immigration.” The event is scheduled for Thursday, August 21, 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., at NNU’s Little Theater. Through speakers, a screening of the EIT film, “The Stranger,” and a panel discussion, the conference will address immigration reform through a distinctly biblical lens.
EIT is a coalition of Christian organizations and leaders who are supportive of bi-partisan immigration reform. Olivia Hicks, EIT volunteer and NNU alumna assisting with conference, explains the purpose of the event: “We hope to convey that immigration is an issue that can’t be divorced from our Christian faith, and that it shouldn’t be an issue church leaders shy away from or consider from an exclusively political framework.”
Pastor Ken Wilde from Capital Christian Center will be the opening speaker followed by keynote speaker, Dr. Daniel Carroll-Rodas. Dr. Carroll-Rodas is an Old Testament professor from Denver Seminary and author of a book titled “Christians at the Border: Immigration, the Church, and the Bible.”
“The Stranger” is a film EIT recently released which helps describe some of the barriers and obstacles immigrants encounter. It shares the stories of three different immigrant families and the suffering they have endured under current immigration laws. The speakers and film screening will be followed by a panel discussion. The panel will examine ways the Christian community can respond to the social and legal aspects of immigration.
“We hope pastors and other Christian leaders will feel compelled and understand how to better welcome immigrants in their local and national communities,” says Hicks.
The $10 registration fee includes lunch. Attendees are asked to register online at www.eventbrite.com, search “Engaging Immigration.” For questions or more information, contact Olivia Hicks at firstname.lastname@example.org.
