For the 13th year, NNU will host the annual Science Olympiad state competition Sat., April 6. The Science Olympiad, founded in 1983, is a national non-profit organization dedicated to improving the quality of K-12 science education, increasing interest in science, creating a technologically literate workforce and providing recognition for outstanding achievement by both students and teachers.

This year approximately 800 students, junior high and senior high school teams consisting of 15 students each will gather to compete in the areas of chemistry, biology, physics, engineering and earth science. Science Olympiads are similar to academic track meets that consist of a series of 23 team events in each division (Division B is middle school; Division C is high school).

Each year a portion of the events are rotated to reflect the ever-changing nature of genetics, earth science, chemistry, anatomy, physics, geology, mechanical engineering and technology. Emphasis is placed on active, hands-on group participation. Through Science Olympiad, students, teachers, parents and business leaders bond together and work toward a shared goal. Teamwork is a required skill in most scientific careers today, and the Science Olympiad encourages group learning with a goal of giving one’s best effort while displaying honesty, integrity and sportsmanship that forge alliances.

Winning teams from Idaho junior high and high schools advance to the National Science Olympiad held at Wright State University, Ohio in May.
