So long “Decembeard”
Most people have heard of “No-Shave November.” This year, however, Northwest Nazarene University is all abuzz about “Decembeard.”
What is “Decembeard” you ask?
At NNU, “Decembeard” is 37 days of President David Alexander growing a beard.
Following a social media blitz, students were able to muster 564 page “likes” on the “Dr. Alexander should do No-Shave November” Facebook page. Even Alexander’s out-of-state nieces and nephews found the page and recruited their friends to “like” it.
Calendar restraints prevented Alexander from being able to participate in “No-Shave November,” but because of the student initiative and massive response on Facebook, Alexander decided to put his own spin on the event. And, thus, “Decembeard” was born.
But there’s more to “Decembeard” than just a beard. In addition to responding to a student request, Alexander has his own request of the students—to raise money for international student scholarships.
“If all these people are for this, let’s identify a cause, raise funds and not just do it for the fun of it,” Alexander explained.
Alexander extended “Decembeard” to today’s chapel—the first of the new semester—and shaved his beard in front of the student body. To date, a total of $764 in donations have been collected for an international student, and, as promised, President Alexander will match the collected amount.
