He’s a guitar-playing, song-writing, coffee-making, back-packing guy from Atwater, California. He’s also an incoming freshman at NNU who is passionate about life and has great compassion for the people of Haiti.
Last November, Aaron went on his first mission trip to Haiti with a group from his church, led by co-pastors and NNU grads Dustin and Olivia Metcalf. Ever since, that experience has played a huge part in shaping who he is and where he’s going. “My compassion for Haiti has allowed me to involve the most unsuspecting people into what we call “The Haiti Project.” Post-earthquake, Aaron was able to hold a school-wide assembly during which he shared with his fellow students what he saw in Haiti, and the disaster that had been caused by the earthquake. He challenged his peers to raise money for Haitian relief, and they responded by raising over $5,000.
In June, Aaron returned to Haiti where he was confronted with tragedy above and beyond his first experience; “It was heart breaking and awesome all at once. I have been trying to digest the images and experiences that have bombarded everything I thought I had figured out. Haiti has held me accountable for many things as a wealthy American Christian, and given me a more global perspective.”
This fall, Aaron is taking what he’s learned about Jesus and being a Christian from Haiti and the Metcalfs and bringing it to campus. He will be studying ministry like his two mentors with plans to focus on youth. For Aaron, this next step just fits. “When I visited the campus, I realized there was nowhere else for me. The people are warm and sincere and care for who you are. I feel like I can be in community with them, and we can share life together. At NNU, I can continue learning and growing, surrounded by people who are all on the same journey. That inspires me!”
It’s not too late for you to join Aaron and other students like him this fall. Meet more students from your class by joining the “NNU Class of 2014” Facebook group. If you haven’t yet applied for admission, do so today atwww.NNU.edu/apply.
