Benefit concert for Haitian relief to be presented

The Department of Music will present a concert Sunday, January 24, at 3 p.m. in Swayne Auditorium of the Brandt Center to benefit relief efforts in Haiti. An offering will be taken that will be divided to support Volunteers In Service Abroad (VISA) and Missionary Aviation Fellowship (MAF), which is based in Nampa. This concert is free and open to the public.

The Bella Voce women’s choir, directed by Dr. Judy Marlett, will open the concert with Vivos Voco, composed by Joan Svymko to honor the victims of the 2004 tsunami. Other numbers include When I am Silent by Joan Varner; Amovolovolo, a traditional Zulu piece with percussion; and, their signature piece, Goin’ Up ’a Yonder.

The Men’s Choir, directed by Ron Curtis, will perform the favorite Prayer for the Children, as well as Poor Man Lazarus, Rise Up O Men of God and I am in Need of Music.

A former member of Bella Voce, Katie Zook, a 2009 NNU graduate from Arlington, Wash., was injured while serving in Haiti and is hospitalized in an ICU trauma unit in Fr. Lauderdale, Fla.
