Textbooks

In an effort to help students keep their educational costs to a minimum, we encourage our online students to utilize competitively-priced online sources to minimize their textbook expense, keeping in mind that used books may also be an option. NNU recommends, but does not require, students to use the links provided on this website. Students must take responsibility for the acquisition of their texts and will be held accountable for timely completion of their course work, even if their particular text supplier is late in delivering their book/s.

Students will receive an email notice at least one month prior to their course start date confirming their text list. Students who desire to order their books well in advance should contact the program administrator at gtoe(at)nnu.edu before ordering since text selections can change due to their availability from the publisher or the professor’s discretion.

Logos Bible Software

Master of Divinity students are required to purchase the Scholar's Library Gold. This extensive digital library produced by Logos Bible Software contains more than 700 titles, with a great number of helpful resources for biblical and language studies in particular.

Master of Arts students may also wish to take advantage of NNU's academic discounts. They will be expected to use this resource in their Bible courses throughout their time in the program and are encouraged to utilize the wide variety of other resources in the library for other courses as well.

Since the Scholar's Library Gold is a required research tool in the M.Div., students may be able to include the cost of the library in their student loans. Logos Bible Software also offers students a monthly payment plan.

For more information on enrolling in NNU's academic pricing with Logos, go to https://www.logos.com/Academic/nnu/MDivfall2008.

Please note that textbooks are in descending order by course descriptor. Please check the schedule for your particular learning community when purchasing texts for your next class.

BL 521 Introduction to Biblical Studies (Richard Thompson)

  • Callen, Barry L. and Richard P. Thompson, eds.  Reading the Bible in Wesleyan Ways:  Some Constructive Proposals.  Kansas city, MO:  Beacon Hill Press of Kansas City, 2004.  (ISBN 0834120488)
  • Childs, Brevard. Introduction to the Old Testament as Scripture. Minneapolis:  Fortress Press, 1982 (1979). (ISBN 0800605322)
  • Brown, Raymond. An Introduction to the New Testament. New York: Doubleday, 1997. (ISBN 0385247672)
  • Soulen, Richard and R. Kendall. Handbook of Biblical Criticism. 3rd edition. Louisville: Westminster, 2001. (ISBN 0664223141)

BL 522 Biblical Theology (George Lyons)

  • Scobie, Charles H. H.  The Ways of Our God:  An Approach to Biblical Theology. Grand Rapids: Eerdmans, 2003.  (ISBN 0802849504)

The following dictionary is a highly recommended, but not required, optional text:
  • Alexander, T. Desmond, Brian S. Rosner, D.A. Carson, Graeme Goldsworthy and Steve Carter, eds.  New Dictionary of Biblical Theology.  Downers Grove:  InterVarsity, 2000.  ISBN 0830814388
Note:  You can find this for sale on the Internet for about $32. However, the professor recommends that students consider spending a bit more and getting this in digital format as a part of The Essential IVP Reference Collection:  The Complete Electronic Bible Study Resource (CD-ROM, Windows Version using the Libranix [Logos] search engine).  This is the form the professor personally owns.  This will work as a stand-alone, even if you do own any other Logos software.  The ISBN for the software is 0830814353.  You can find it for around $117 at Half.com by searching http://www.campusi.com using the ISBN number.
Why spend the extra money?  Other dictionaries and single-volume commentaries are included in the pacakge:  Dictionary of Jesus and the Gospels, Dictionary of Paul and His Letters, Dictionary of the Later New Testament and It's Developments, Dictionary of New Testament Background, IVP Bible Background Commentary: Old Testament, IVP Bible Background Commentary: New Testament, New Bible Dictionary, New Bible Commentary, Hard Sayings of the Bible, Dictionary of Biblical Imagery, New Bible Atlas, and New Dictionary of Theology.  These are all useful reference works (some quite good quality) that you should have in your library anyway.  All together, they would cost you hundreds of dollars if you purchased them separately in the print editions.
