DESCRIPTION

Shoot Footage during ride-alongs, jail and other events and develop video or videos for areas of the Ada County Sheriff's Office.  Students, please see your Department Internship Advisor within your major for details on how to register for credits. 

SKILLS/QUALIFICATIONS

~Preference may be given to those students who have strong excel skills and are either currently taking or have taken a research methods course.

~Be at least 18 years old

~Currently have a 2.0 cumulative GPA or above

~Knowledge of English grammar, punctuation and spelling

~Knowledge of modern office equipment, practice and procedures

~Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing

~Ability to maintain confidentiality of data

~Ability to follow written and verbal instructions

~Complete an interview, a background investigation, and a polygraph examination

Internship - Crime Research & Planning Unit-Jail Research

DESCRIPTION

Students, please see your Department Internship Advisor within your major for details on how to register for credits.  Work on a variety of projects related to jail research.  Projects may include the following:  Review history of inmates who had attempted/committed suicide, analyze our inmate discipline and/or grievance process, explore whether an increase in our jail population influences use of force, and others.  The intern would also be able to work on projects related to their own interests in law enforcement.

Work with a project management team and our patrol deputies, booking deputies, records technicians, County IT and other partners to document and improve the connection between our business practices and data systems.

Legal Intake Internship

DESCRIPTION

Interns will pre-screen written requests for legal assistance and make an initial determination of whether the request falls within the ACLU's guidelines.   Summarize complaints for legal staff, putting information into the intake database, drafting response letters to complainants, referring complainants to appropriate organizations if the ACLU of Idaho is unable to offer assistance, and conduct legal research.  With experience, interns occasionally communicate directly with clients in order to gather necessary information to evaluate a case.

SKILLS/QUALIFICATIONS

Applicants should have an interest in civil liberties, good interpersonal and analytical skills, excellent writing skills and computer knowledge

DAYS/HOURS

A minimum of 10 hours per week is required, but daily schedules are flexible.

SALARY

Internship is unpaid, however, students have the opportunity to earn credit through his/her university.  Valuable letters of recommendation are available upon completing of internship.

Alternative Sentencing Program:  Assist with electronic monitoring program - hook ups, monitoring, and file audits.  Conducting pre-trial release assessments and possibly some work with placement management.

Planning & Research:  Field Report Writing for Police - Work with patrol and booking deputies, records technicians, County IT and other partners to help develop a paperless field report writing system for departmental reports.

Community Resources:  Developing Youth Yellow Pages and Officer Resource Cards, and the Ada County Bicycle Registration Program. 

Community Information - Video Production:  Shoot footage during ride-alongs, jail and other events and develop video or videos for areas of the Ada County Sheriff's Office.

Juvenile Investigations:  Research best practices nation wide for school safety plans and develop school safety plans for Ada County.  This would include interviewing school admin., teachers, and school resource officers and then writing the plan.

STEP (Selective Traffic Enforcement Program:  Work on an unbiased policing project performing some data analysis and preliminary studies on traffic issues.  May also include traffic studies.  Intern may also assist with VIN number checks and abandoned vehicle coordination.
