Course Descriptions
EDUC 7511. The Learning Process (3 credits)
Students examine accepted theories and current research in learning behavior. They also explore the unique styles of learning and recent studies in brain function and behavior as these relate to the learning process.
EDUC 7518. Action Research for Educators (3 credits)
This course is an introduction to traditional and action research in the school setting. Students learn literature review, data collection and interpretation, and survey methods. Students are also required to prepare an action research proposal.
EDUC 7531. Statistical Applications for Educators (2 credits)
The course provides an introduction to statistical approaches to making decisions in K-12 schools. It introduces students to descriptive and inferential statistics commonly used in education. No previous course work in statistics is assumed.
EDUC 7532. Instructional Models (3 credits)
The course is designed to acquaint students with four basic families of instructional models: 1) information processing, 2) personal development, 3) social development, and 4) behavioral systems. Students review examples of models that represent each family. In addition, the course introduces reflective teaching practices based on the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards. Addressing those standards is a major part of the course.
EDUC 7533. Curriculum and Assessment (3 credits)
This course explores historical, philosophical, and contemporary issues of curriculum design, including concept-based curriculum. Students explore sound assessment practices and learn to promote the effective use of assessment as a teaching tool. Students develop and analyze curriculum, including assessment components.
EDUC 7545. Classroom and Behavior Management in the Mainstreamed Classroom (3 credits)
This course offers procedures for developing appropriate behaviors in the regular classroom both with regular students and with students considered behaviorally disordered. Students discuss behavior modification techniques and learn to develop classroom management techniques. Students also explore non-instructional expectations of the teacher and relations with colleagues and parents.
EDUC 7561. Multicultural Issues in Education (2 credits)
Students examine the pluralistic nature of the school population and the implications this has to society and to the instructional process.
EDUC 7562. Technology in Education (3 credits)
This course helps students gain an awareness of current and emerging computer technologies and develop practical skills for integrating these technologies in educational settings. Students explore the essential and advanced features of software applications.
EDUC 7564. Values in Education (2 credits)
Students study the educator's role in relation to student and societal values. Course work includes theories and practical application related to moral development and the educator’s responsibility in character education and values formation.
EDUC 7598c. Seminar: Action Research (1 credit)
The purpose of this seminar is to provide guidance for students who are completing their action research project. The finished product is the action research paper and presentation.
