M.Ed. Application Process

Admission Requirements

 Students desiring the M.Ed. degree will meet these admission requirements:

  1. A bachelor's degree from a regionally-accredited college or university.
  2. A cumulative GPA of 2.8 in the bachelor's program or 3.0 in the most recent 30 semester credits earned.
  3. Certification/Licensure as a classroom teacher or counselor based on a recommendation from a state approved higher education teacher preparation program.
  4. Approval by the Graduate Education Admissions Committee.

Students desiring the Ed.S. degree will meet these admission requirements:

  1. A master's degree from a regionally-accredited college or university.
  2. A cumulative GPA of 3.0 in the master's program.
  3. Certification/Licensure as a classroom teacher, school counselor, or school psychologist based on a recommendation from a state approved higher education preparation program.
  4. Approval by the Graduate Education Admissions Committee.

The Graduate Education Admissions Committee may approve exceptions to regular admission requirements.

Application for Admission

Students desiring admission to the M.Ed. or Ed.S. programs will complete the following:

  1. Submit an application online or obtain the application form from the Graduate Studies in Education Office (208) 467-8341.
  2. Submit a non-refundable application fee ($75 M.Ed. Teaching and Learning Online) or ($50 Ed.S.) or ($25 M.Ed. all other programs).
  3. Submit an official sealed transcript from the regionally accredited institution(s) where you received your bachlor's degree and (if applicable) your master's degree.
    (We do not accept faxed transcripts.)
  4. Provide a copy of your teaching certificate.
  5. Provide evidence of competency in writing skills by submitting an essay using the essay guidelines.
  6. Specific program requirements as follows: 

Curriculum & Instruction and Teaching & Learning Online Programs:

  •  Self-evaluation of disposition for teaching.
  • Two letters of recommendation from professional colleagues who are familiar with the candidate’s academic and professional capabilities. 

Educational Leadership Building Administrator, Charter/Private School Admin, and Director of Special Ed Programs:

  • Self-evaluation of disposition for administration
  • One letter of recommendation from a professional colleague
  • One completed Educational Leadership Evaluation Form from the applicant’s current building administrator. The letter of recommedation and the evaluation form must be from two different individuals. Please have the evaluation sent directly to Graduate Studies in Education.

Exceptional Child Program:

  •  Self-evaluation of disposition for teaching.
  • Two letters of recommendation from professional colleagues who are familiar with the candidate’s academic and professional capabilities. 

Reading Online Program:

  • Two letters of recommendation from professional colleagues who are familiar with the candidate’s academic and professional capabilities. 

Education Specialist Programs:

  • Self-evaluation of disposition for administration.

  • One letter of recommendation from a professional colleague

  • One completed Educational Leadership Evaluation Form from the applicant’s current district superintendent (or designee). The letter of recommedation and the evaluation form must be from two different individuals. Please have the evaluation sent directly to Graduate Studies in Education. 

In addition, the applicant will consult with the director of the appropriate graduate education program to develop a program plan.

Application Due Dates

All application requirements must be met before applicant's name will be placed on the Graduate Education Admissions Committte agenda. The Graduate Education Committee meets monthly and considers the application material and the potential for success for the candidate within an NNU graduate program.  The committee then votes to admit or deny admission into the Graduate Education Program. The candidate is notified in writing of the committee decision.

Financial Aid

Financial Aid may be available. Application forms for Financial Aid are available from the Financial Aid Office by calling 208-467-8424, or on the web at Financial Aid.

Note for Students Not Yet Admitted

Graduate Education applicants, except for the M.Ed. Reading Program, may complete a maximum of six credit hours at NNU before being admitted into the Graduate Education program.  Prior to admission to the Graduate Education program, NNU does not guarantee, either directly or indirectly, that students who take Graduate Education classes will:

 1) Be admitted into the Graduate Education program,

 2) Receive a refund of monies spent on classes beyond the regular refund dates,                                                  

 3) Be able to transfer class credits into a degree program when classes are taken prior to admission.

 Also, students not yet admitted are not legally eligible to receive a student loan until they are officially admitted into a program.
