Elementary Education

The Elementary Education program at NNU is an exciting program filled with hands-on experiences in local elementary schools. NNUís education programs are viewed by educators around the state and the region as the best around. Because graduates are highly sought after by principals seeking to hire the best prepared teachers, our annual employment rate is almost 100% among graduates seeking teaching jobs. The Elementary Education program leads to certification in 
grades K-8.  

The traditional undergraduate elementary education program is geared to college students who begin their coursework soon after completing high school, but it is also popular for non-traditional students. The program culminates in an internship integrating methods courses with K-5 classroom experience. Interns work side-by-side with a master teacher to gain expertise in managing a classroom and applying best practices in their planning and teaching. NNU faculty supervisors provide ongoing coaching and support.

Secondary Education

The Secondary Education program at NNU is an exciting program filled with many options for teaching fields and multiple hands-on experiences in local middle and high schools. NNUís education programs are viewed by educators around the state and the region as producing quality teachers. NNU graduates are highly sought by principals seeking to hire highly qualified teachers. The Secondary Education program leads to certification in grades 6-12.  

The traditional undergraduate secondary education program is geared to college students who begin their coursework soon after completing high school, but it is also popular among non traditional students.

Certification in Idaho requires that candidates complete either a teaching area in a single subject (45 semester credits required) or a first (30 semester credits required) and second (20 semester credits required) teaching field in two different areas.

Teaching Areas offered at NNU include art, biology, chemistry, English, kinesiology, mathematics, music, social science and Spanish.

First teaching fields offered at NNU include biology, chemistry, English, history, kinesiology, mathematics, and Spanish.

Second teaching fields offered at NNU include art, biology, chemistry, communication, economics, English, health, history, kinesiology, mathematics, music, physics, political science, psychology, and Spanish

The program culminates in a semester-long student teaching experience that allows NNU student teachers to gain expertise in managing a classroom and applying best practices in their teaching. They develop and teach a unit, plan and teach daily lessons in their subject area, and use various forms of assessment to monitor student learning. NNU faculty supervisors are readily available in the schools to provide ongoing coaching and support.

Special Education

The new Special Education program at NNU is an exciting program that prepares compassionate, qualified special education teachers who would love more than anything to help special needs students reach their full potential. This program is filled with hands-on experiences in local schools. NNUís education programs are viewed by educators around the state and the region as the best around. Because graduates are highly sought after by principals seeking to hire the best prepared teachers, our annual employment rate is almost 100% among graduates seeking teaching jobs. 

The Special Education program:

  • Is for those who have the passion and heart for making a difference in the lives of special needs children and youth. 
  • Takes four years to complete.  
  • Results in Idaho Special Education Generalist K-12 Teacher Certification.

This final school-based experience will allow NNU student teachers to gain expertise in managing a classroom and applying best practices in their teaching.
