Program Philosophy

Mass Communications is an enormous topic, leading to thousands of possible job descriptions at multiple levels of difficulty.  It's a subject that can be taught in a thousand different ways.  Every school will approach the subject of Mass Communications in a slightly different manner, focusing on different aspects of the field and varying levels of difficulty.  At NNU, we have made a conscious choice to limit the scope of our instruction:

  • While we touch on all eight forms of mass media, we focus specifically on film and television
  • We teach only "behind the camera" aspects of those industries (in Mass Comm -- see our BA in Communication for in-front-of-the-camera roles)
  • The standard for both student and department productions is Network Quality television and National Quality film production
  • By setting the standard high, we open the largest possible array of jobs to our students.  Once you've learned the skills of, and worked on, a professional feature-film crew, you can easily work as a local TV news photographer.  If we demand network-quality production in your student videos, you'll create the best wedding videos in town, if that's what you choose to do when you graduate
  • Our philosophy is to stress the highest standards of professionalism in your work ethic, in your attitude, and in your creative and technical skill set
