High School Crew Points
High school students of sophomore standing and above (or foreign equivalent) can begin earning Crew Points even before they arrive at NNU.
What’s a Crew Point? A point Mass Comm students earn for time and effort they invest in their education outside of class. Usually this means time spent working on a film or video crew, but Crew Points can also be earned by attending certain seminars or workshops, watching certain movies, helping with department projects and so forth. Click Here for more information on Mass Comm Crew Points.
As a high school student, you can begin earning Crew Points now for work you're doing in school, at your church, or even on your own.
Mass Communications majors are required to earn a minimum of 150 Crew Points in order to graduate. Awards are given for earning more than the minimum – the Bronze, Silver, and Gold Slate awards.
Crew Points are also used to help determine which students get to go to Sundance, which are "first in line" for special opportunities, in the Teaching Assistant scholarship selection process, and for other special considerations. In other words, those who have the most points, get the best opportunities.
If you plan to attend NNU, and think you might major in Mass Communications, you can apply to begin earning Crew Points for work you’re doing now. This gives you a head start on your Crew Points – and your education – when you arrive at NNU.
HS Crew Points can be earned in several ways, in two separate categories:
Earn Production Crew Points by . . .
- working on a high school video team
- working for a local TV station or production house
- helping with media production at your church
- producing your own short "films"
- working on a film or video shoot while visiting NNU (preview days, etc.)
Earn Academic Crew Points by . . .
- attending a film festival, seminar, etc.
- reading certain books on film production
- watching certain movies at home or in school
Basically, points can be earned for any media production or education which is supervised by an adult, takes place at NNU, or results in a product you can submit to the faculty at NNU (such as a video or report).

Earning High School Crew Points does NOT guarantee admission to NNU. Normal admission requirements apply. Crew Points do not earn college credit, though they do count toward graduation requirements for a Mass Comm degree.
