Virgil W. Vail Media Studies Award
Presented to an outstanding senior in the Mass Communications program who has exhibited exceptional knowlege and skill in his or her course of study. Criteria for this award include knowlege and skills in theory, history, criticism, writing, producing, directing and editing. The student will demonstrate potential for future employment in the media field, and have a minimum 2.5 GPA.
Given in honor of Virgil W. Vail who built and engineered the first media studies enterprise at NNC -- radio station KCRH-FM, with the first solid-state FM exciter transmitter approved by the FCC -- during the 1960's. Professor Vail continued to support media studies at NNU through design and construction of studio equipment and facilities.
Donnell J. Smith Debate Trophy
Named after the former NNC business manager who came to NNC in the 1920's. Rev. Smith had a special love for debate and taught debate, along with a number of other subjects, at Pasedena College (now Point Loma). The first award was given out in 1946.
This award is given to the student or students who have demonstrated the ability to think and reason within the challenge of intercollegiate debate competition. NNU competes with approximately 40 colleges and universities in our Northwest Conference as well as in regional and national competitions.
Mallalieu A. Wilson Communication Award
Presented to a senior student who has developed and applied with excellence his or her communication skills in a variety of communication and leadership activities across the campus. These areas may include student government, leadership positions in campus clubs or organizations, print communications, academic endeavors which demonstrate their communication skills, and in drama and/or forensics participation.
Sidney C. Baker Cinematography Award
Sydney C. Baker was a pioneer in the areas of photography and filmmaking during the early 1900's. He studied under George Eastman (Eastman Kodak), and created some of the first stop-action animation films shown in theaters. He was also Professor Ytreeide’s grandfather. This award is given to the Mass Comm student of any standing who has consistently demonstrated the highest level of image making or dedication to filmmaking throughout the year.
Bronze, Silver & Gold Slate Awards
Awarded to any graduating senior student who has earned 200, 250 or 300 Crew Points respectively. This achievement award represents a dedication to the field worthy of recognition. It comes with a letter from the department chair which may be attached to future resume's and job applications.
