Message From the Chair

David C. Houghton, Ph.D.
Chair, Department of Business & Economics
Professor of Marketing

As you consider attending or partnering with the NNU School of Business.  Let me give you some of the highlights of our program.

The School of Business is located in the Helstrom Business Center. This state-of-the-art facility has smart board technology in each class room, and the entire building has wireless access to the campus network.  We strive to be on the leading edge of technological trends and believe the Helstrom Business Center provides visible and tangible evidence of this.

Our students, as part of their program, participate in at least one internship.  Many of these internships lead to full-time jobs after graduation.  Recent students have interned at Unilever, Wal-Mart headquarters, Wells Fargo, Intuit, and many local companies.

NNU business students also take the ETS Major Field Test in Business exam each year.  For ten years, the school has finished in the 90th percentile or higher.  This year was no exception.  I'm proud to report that NNU's graduating seniors scored in the 90th percentile. This is no easy task as the NNU students compete against nearly 80,000 students from 450 universities.

In addition to internships, many NNU students choose to participate in one or more extracurricular activities.  Within the School of Business, there are four extracurricular opportunities.  These include the Accounting Club, the American Marketing Association, the Students In Free Enterprise (SIFE) team, and the Student Managed Fund.  The Accounting Club and the AMA provide valuable networking opportunities within the profession.  The Students in Free Enterprise team competes at the regional and national level (more information is available at http://www.nnu.edu/sife/).  The Student Managed Fund provides $50,000 of the university's endowment for the students to manage.  Historically, NNU students have outperformed both the market average and professional managers!

These are just some of the exciting things happening at NNU.  If you would like more information about the Department of Business, don't hesitate to contact me.   I may be reached by e-mail or by phone (208-467-8404). Or, better yet, stop by the campus and I'll give you a tour of our facility.
