ASCD Summer Conference - Nashville, TN

ED 550 ASCD: Differentiated Instruction/Understanding by Design/What Works in Schools (1)

This course is offered in conjunction with the ASCD Summer conference in Nashville, Tennessee that supports:

  1. Differentiated Instruction (DI) A systematic approach to ensuring that every student is learning, regardless of interests, learning styles, or readiness for school,
  2. Understanding by Design (UbD) A framework to design new curriculum based on achieving student understanding of content, and
  3. What Works In Schools (WWIS) A research-based approach to focusing your entire school or district on the school-, teacher-, and student-level factors that influence achievement.

Participants will have an opportunity to explore all three or go in depth on the one which he/she is most interested.

The Gifted and Talented Practicum is a capstone course for the G/T Endorsement that covers information concerning development and administration of G/T Programs, and includes a 150 hour internship.

ED 550 VISUALIZING MATH: HELPING STUDENTS SUCCEED (2)

This active math workshop course is offered to showcase new visualization techniques for K-12 educators to better assist them in reaching their students and promote a deeper understanding of math concepts.  The course will include the development of an innovative mathematics project by course participants.

ED 550 CN: IDAHO COMPREHENSIVE LITERACY COURSE (3)

This course complies with the Idaho Comprehensive Literacy Course Standards I-III required of K-8 teachers and principals for recertification.

ED 550 IDAHO COMPREHENSIVE LITERACY COURSE, Stds 1-3 (3)

This course is designed to meet the intent of Idaho Code §33-1207A and will provide practical application of the Literacy Standards and Idaho's Comprehensive Literacy Plan.  Educators will identify best practices in literacy and language acquisition in addition to instruction and assessment of reading.  Current research in brain-compatible teaching and learning theory as applied to reading will be examined.  Educators will learn how language is acquired, develop lessons in explicit and embedded phonics and phonemic awareness.  Participants will also develop lessons in comprehension and vocabulary development.  Web-sites relevant to literacy-development and the implications of technology will be explored.  This course is an intense six days, but you will be finished with the recertification requirement.

This course is offered in conjunction with the National Oregon California Trails Conference and will include historic presentations, field trips on the trails, and other related activities.  For conference information, visit their website at www.octa-trails.org

ED 550 PROJECT LEARNING TREE  (1)  
Project learning tree (PLT) is an award-winning environmental education program designed for teachers and others working with school-aged youth.  Class participants learn about trees and forests, and how to use the extensive PLT Activity Guide to help students meet academic standards.  The aim to provide increased content knowledge about trees, forests and the total environment; understanding of the importance of teaching students how to think, rather than telling them what to think, about complex environmental issues; practical application of effective teaching skills; and the ability to use the PLT materials in the participant’s classroom or youth organization. ED 550 PROJECT WET  (1)
The goal of Project WET is to facilitate and promote awareness, appreciation, knowledge, and stewardship of water resources through the development dissemination of classroom-ready teaching aids and through the establishment of state and internationally sponsored Project WET programs.  Contact Coordinator Julie Scanlin at  jscanlin(at)uidaho.edu  to pre-register or for more information.  Registration for credit is done at the first session.  Workshop fee plus $60 for credit.  Sessions are offered at various locations in Idaho.

ED 550 PROJECT WILD  (1)
The goal of Project WILD is to assist learners of any age in developing awareness, knowledge, skills and commitment to result in informed decisions, responsible behavior and constructive actions concerning wildlife and the environment on which all life depends.  Instructional activities within the Project WILD materials are designed for easy integration into school subject and skill areas-especially science, social studies, language arts, mathematics and art-so that classroom teachers may use the materials as a means to teach required skills....at the same time teaching about people, wildlife and the environment.  Contact Coordinator Lori Adams, ladams(at)IDFG.idaho.gov to pre-register or for more information.  Registration for credit is done at the first session.  $20 workshop fee plus $60 for credit.  Sessions are offered at various locations in Idaho.
