Evacuation of Persons With Disabilities

Prior to an emergency, each area should evaluate the evacuation needs of any person(s) with disabilities.  Any special needs or actions should then be planned and practiced as applicable.

PERSONS WITH VISUAL IMPAIRMENTS:

In the event of an emergency, tell the person the nature of the emergency and guide him/her to a safe area.

PERSONS WITH HEARING IMPAIRMENTS:

  1. To warn a hearing-impaired person of an emergency, get his/her attention with a gesture or a light tap on the arm or shoulder.
  2. Write a note explaining the nature of the emergency.

PERSONS USING CRUTCHES, CANES, OR WALKERS:

  1. Help guide the person to a safe area.
  2. Carrying options may include using a two-person arm lock position, or having the person sit in a sturdy chair and be carried by two people to a safe area. (Those providing assistance must consider safe lifting procedures for themselves and for the person being carried.)

PERSONS IN WHEELCHAIRS:

Always consult with the person in the wheelchair regarding:

  1. The number of people necessary for assistance.
  2. Ways of being moved from the wheelchair.  (Those providing assistance must consider safe lifting procedures for themselves and for the person being carried.)
  3. Whether to extend or bend extremities when lifting because of pain, catheter, braces, spasticity, etc.
  4. Being carried forward or backward on a flight of stairs.
  5. The type of assistance necessary after evacuation.
