REQUIREMENT REDUCTIONS
All exceptions to the standard attendance requirements must be petitioned.  It is the student’s responsibility to complete the form for a chapel credit reduction (by the deadline announced in Cru-Keys) EACH SEMESTER.

The following are the basis for reductions:

1.  Outside Employment.
* Full-time workers (35+ hrs/wk) = 14.
* Part-time workers (25-35 hrs/wk) = 21.

*Students who work regularly during the chapel period, but do not fit into the hrs /wk categories stated above, should submit a reduction petition for consideration of a potential reduction.

   2.  School-sponsored field experience or internship assignments.  Reductions will be based on the total number of experience hours required.

   3.  Required school-sponsored trips.   Students who cannot attend @ least 2 chapels in a week due to out-of-town school-sponsored trips are potentially eligible for attendance credit once the supervising faculty member submits a request (and a list of students involved) for consideration.

 4.   Students dropping to part-time:
*7-11 academic credits
  Off-campus= 14.  On-campus= NO Reduction
*6 academic credits or less
  Off-campus = 0    On-campus= NO Reduction

** Approved reductions do not remain in effect without being renewed EACH TERM.

**# of academic credits will not be considered when evaluating a petition for attendance reduction for full-time students.

REDUCTION APPLICATION DEADLINE

WHEN: The Friday following the last day to add classes.

WHERE: Submit request forms to the Chapel Secretary, Sue Stevenson, downstairs in the Student Center.  (If you have a field experience, internship, practicum, etc. required but do not have specific schedule by the deadline, turn in your form with the info you have, &  submit the specifics once they become available.)

EXCEPTIONS: Reduction requests may be filed after the deadline if:

  1.  Your circumstances change after reductions are due.

  2.  You have never filed one late.   (One late request is allowed during the years you are @ NNU.)

ATTENDANCE RECORDING

   1.  Attendance cards will be distributed by student chapel monitors by the doors to Swayne Auditorium, starting 15 minutes before the scheduled beginning time of any given chapel/convocation.

   2.  Cards must contain a correct signature with first & last name and a NNU identification number in order to receive credit.

   3.  The chapel monitors at the exit doors will receive attendance cards after a chapel or convocation is dismissed.

   4.  The person whose signature appears on the card must turn in the card.

   5. Students leaving chapel/convocation before being officially dismissed will not receive attendance credit for that day.  Students needing to leave early for field experience, school-sponsored trips, or employment are to notify the Office of Student Development in advance.

  6.  It is expected that persons attending a chapel/convocation will conduct themselves with respect for those presenting the program as well as those seated near them.  Reported behavior that is rude or disruptive to the chapel/convocation setting will result in the loss of attendance credit, and may lead to further disciplinary action.

LATE ARRIVALS
  1.  Anyone entering after chapel/convocation officially begins must sign a late-arrival card.  Students disregarding this procedure will not receive credit for that service.

  2.  Late-arrival cards will be distributed for a period of 10 minutes from the beginning of each service.

   3.  3 late-arrivals are counted as one absence.

ALTERNATE CHAPEL CREDITS

Alternative community building options are offered to provide a variety of experiences and an added degree of flexibility in the fulfillment of the chapel requirement.

Alternate chapel possibilities are listed on the back of the alternate chapel cards, available @ Student Development during office hours.  They include Time Out on Wednesday nights @ 9:00pm, and participation in organized NNU ministry club activities.

Cards, with student name, ID #, and signature are to be turned in to the director of an approved alternate chapel activity, who will sign and then route them to Student Development for posting to attendance records.   20% of a student’s total required number of chapels, up to a maximum of 5, may be obtained in this manner.

                              Total

Chapels Required             Alternates Allowed

       32-24                 =             5

       20-23                 =             4

       15-19                 =             3

       10-14                 =             2

         5 – 9                =             1

CONSEQUENCES OF UNMET ATTENDANCE REQUIREMENTS
Our desire is that, by understanding the significance and centrality of the chapel/convocation program for NNU, and by a positive attitude toward our times of worship and instruction together, none of the below disciplinary actions ever becomes necessary.

Students who do not fulfill their chapel attendance requirements should be aware of the following resulting consequences:
1. A fine of $10 per chapel/convocation short of one’s requirement will be posted to the student’s account on the week following finals.
2. Failure to attend at least 50% of a student’s required chapels will result in the denial of enrollment for a period of one semester.
3. Students found to have falsified their chapel attendance, or to have participated in the falsification of the chapel attendance of another student, through any means, will face disciplinary consequences that may include a fine of up to $50.00 for a first occurrence.
4. Any issues regarding attendance must be resolved before the last day of the semester.

NOTE: Students are responsible for tracking their progress in meeting their attendance requirement. Students may check their attendance records at www.nnu.edu/login and then click on Chapel Attendance Record.
